Earliest settlement

Humans were originally nomadic, moving from place to place in search of food and resources. The first city settlements appeared around 7000 years ago in Greece with Argos, Greece claiming to be the oldest city in the world but this is contested by Byblos, Lebanon which is around the same age.
These early cities would have had tiny populations in comparison to todays cities, generally less than 5000 people. The cities would have had walls for defence so that other people could not invade.
