Earliest settlement

Humans were originally nomadic, moving from place to place in search of food and resources. The first city settlements appeared around 7000 years ago in Greece with Argos, Greece claiming to be the oldest city in the world but this is contested by Byblos, Lebanon which is around the same age.
These early cities would have had tiny populations in comparison to todays cities, generally less than 5000 people. The cities would have had walls for defence so that other people could not invade.

Where did they start?

The first trace modern humans is from around 200000 years ago in east Africa. From there, around 60000 years ago the humans spread south to populate the rest of Africa and went north through Egypt and then east towards India. From India they went Further east to China and south, through south east Asia to Australia. They had arrived at these locations by 50000 years ago. The next major movement of humans was the movement of humans from north Africa to Europe around 40000 years ago. By 16000 years ago the humans had moved north west from central Asia and managed to move across to north America. From there they continued moving south and by 15000 years ago had reached south America.Image result for early human movement map

Geography blog!

Hi. I'm Simon. Today I am starting a blog about the movement of humans throughout time. This will include where humans moved and why they moved there. It will also include information on settlements such as why settlements were built in certain places. I will aim to post once weekly for the foreseeable future.
